Yoga poses help condition your body and there are thousands of poses, which can be broken down into kriyas (actions), mudras (seals) and bandhas (locks). Yoga kriya focuses on the effort needed to move the energy through the spine; yoga mudra concentrates on the gesture to hold the energy; and yoga bandha focuses on holding muscular contractions.
Yoga helps teach you to focus on specific parts or areas of your body. For example, in a yoga class, the instructor will ask you to bring your awareness to specific body parts, which will help you connect the mind and body – the focus is internal between you and your body.
Through controlled breathing, yoga merges the mind, body and spirit. Pranayamas help control the energy flow in your body and helps you focus on the muscles. During savasana (corpse pose) your heart rate is slowed down, your mind is calm and you will find a sense of inner peace.
